SYNOPSIS

After living in the US for years, a young woman Esmeralda returns to her native land Colombia to confront her mother about her traumatic childhood memories. Back in her neighborhood, Esmeralda faces the ghosts of her past and learns to let go and forgive by creating an unbreakable bond with her mother.

I come from a culture where silencing women’s voices is so common that it almost seems to be part of it, making it impossible to address these issues. I see myself in Esmeralda’s journey and struggled to deal with the same emotions before confronting my mother about what each of us decided to keep to ourselves because even thinking about it was so painful. Working on this story for the past few years has helped me to come to an understanding of my own experience and realize that it isn’t about pointing fingers anymore, instead, it’s about letting go of those emotions that aren’t allowing us to find peace within ourselves to embark on our healing process.

This film explores themes of survival, forgiveness, and women empowerment. Addressing issues of a culture that in one way or another one are universal. With this film, we are raising women’s voices, especially women of color who have gone through the same experience by providing our support and encouragement to free themselves.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

CAMPAIGN VIDEO

We created this promotional video to show the necessity behind a film like Esmeralda, and the way in which this film could create social impact to many young girls and women around the world. We flew a small crew to Colombia in January 2021, and the rest of the crew filmed themselves from their respective locations.

After setting out to fundraise $25K for production and post-production, our expectations were exceeded when we ended up raising $40K with the help from our Executive and Associate Producers, as well as our grantors and backers who believed in our story. We are beyond grateful to all of the people who supported us in bringing this film to life!
